The Return of the King

Mattel's Masters of the Universe (MotU), one of the company's most successful multimedia franchises, is to return in the Fall!

Behold King Grayskull, who will be a SDCC Exclusive! King Grayskull is the inaugural MotU figure to feature super articulation and classic detail sculpting by the Four Horsemen. Grayskull comes in a brand new package, featuring lights and sounds, which transforms into a mini Castle Grayskull playset.

Castle Grayskull was once home to King Grayskull, an ancestor of Prince Adam. He appears in the Episode, "The Power of Grayskull", waging battle and ultimately defeating the Snakemen led by King Hiss. King Grayskull's triumph was shortlived and he dies defending his kingdom from Hordak. During his lifetime, King Grayskull ruled with wisdom and compassion.

With the emphasis on the collectors market, and The Four Horsemen in the sculpting saddle, the revitalised MotU line is sure to raise the bar on what constitutes the very pinnacle in mass produced collectibles! Read my childhood Masters of the Universe recollection!

If anyone at Mattel is reading this, please contact me to discuss the possibility of running a 'give-away' competition during the holiday season! Thank you in advance.

Yo Joe!

This year marks the 25th anniversary of G.I. JOE. And to mark this auspicious event, I'm launching dedicated G.I. JOE shops:

G.I. JOE Shop UK
G.I. JOE Shop USA

In 1982 Hasbro introduced a new line of products that changed the landscape of boys action figures: G.I. JOE A REAL AMERICAN HERO. The innovative line of 3-3/4-inch, fully articulated and fully poseable action figures complete with molded uniforms, gear and vehicles, quickly became one of the most memorable toy lines of the 1980s.

The A REAL AMERICAN HERO line launched not only a successful line of toys, but was also represented in an animated series and in a Marvel Comics series. Over the years, the G.I. JOE vs. COBRA storyline provided an opportunity to introduce more than 500 figures, including some ‘real-life’ people, such as Sgt. Slaughter and William “Refrigerator” Perry.

Now, twenty-five years later, Hasbro will commemorate the anniversary with the release of a special edition series of A REAL AMERICAN HERO figures that features the twenty-five most popular characters in the history of the line.

Forever Is A Long Time Coming

When Hasbro, Inc. introduced the TRANSFORMERS brand to the U.S. in 1984, it revolutionized a category it had itself invented some 20 years earlier -- action figures.

TRANSFORMERS – originally dubbed “The Transformers” -- heralded an entirely new way to interact with action figures, giving kids the power to literally change the toys from one form into another (initially, from robots to vehicles). As the iconic theme song went, there was “more than meets the eye.”

But that was only the beginning. With intriguing personalities, captivating story lines and great battle action, Hasbro firmly entrenched the TRANSFORMERS brand into the pantheons of modern pop culture. Over the past two decades, the TRANSFORMERS brand has emerged as one of the most successful properties in action figure history, spawning numerous television series, comic books, and even a feature length animated film.

Today, the TRANSFORMERS brand has a devoted following of fans of all ages, with Optimus Prime and Megatron captivating a whole new generation of fans. The franchise is about to be taken to a new level with the July 4th premiere of the first-ever live-action feature film, TRANSFORMERS, from DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures, directed by Michael Bay and executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

A timeline of key TRANSFORMERS brand milestones follows

Pre-1984 –
· Hasbro secures the rights to many changing/converting robot brands in Japan and creates the umbrella name THE TRANSFORMERS to unite them. Takara, a Japanese toy manufacturer saw the potential for future TRANSFORMERS growth and becomes Hasbro’s lead partner in the development of new TRANSFORMERS products. This successful alliance has lasted for more than 20 years.
1984 –
* The TRANSFORMERS toy line is launched by Hasbro, with a classic theme song that had kids all over the U.S. reciting the refrain “Robots in Disguise.” There twenty-one toys in the original set, including OPTIMUS PRIME, MEGATRON, BUMBLEBEE, JAZZ and STARSCREAM. This is the beginning of what has come to be known the “Generation: 1” era.
* The TRANSFORMERS animated television series debuts with a mini series titled “MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE.” New episodes began in September, airing on Saturday mornings.
* Marvel Comics releases four-issue TRANSFORMERS comic series titled “The TRANSFORMERS.”
1985 –
* Hasbro releases second series of TRANSFORMERS toys, highlighted by the introduction of DINOBOTS and CONSTRUCTICONS (the first group of figures that can combine to form a larger robot).
* Two TRANSFORMERS figures are introduced with battery-operated functions: SHOCKWAVE has a flashing light and sound effects, and OMEGA SUPREME walks and has a tank with a turret that spins and lights up while rolling around a track.
1986 –
* The animated feature film titled TRANSFORMERS: The Movie was released in theaters, featuring many of the characters that the new toys were modeled after. It featured the voice talents of Leonard Nimoy, Eric Idle, Judd Nelson, Robert Stack, and Orson Welles, and a rock soundtrack.
* Hasbro introduces cities for both the AUTOBOTS and DECEPTICONS: METROPLEX for the AUTOBOTS and TRYPTICON for the DECEPTICONS.
1987 –
* The HEADMASTERS and TARGETMASTERS figures are introduced into the TRANSFORMERS toy line.
* Hasbro introduced FORTRESS MAXIMUS, the largest TRANSFORMERS figure at the time, measuring a whopping two-feet-tall.
1988 –
* Hasbro released the PRETENDERS, robots that disguise themselves inside an included shell, and MICROMASTERS, very, very small vehicle that changes into robots.
* OPTIMUS PRIME is revived with a new TRANSFORMERS figure from Hasbro, featuring ‘POWERMASTER” technology wherein a smaller robot is used to unlock a special feature on the larger, more deluxe figure.
1989 –
* Hasbro introduces four of the TRANSFORMERS fans’ favorite characters back into the toy line: BUMBLEBEE, JAZZ, GRIMLOCK and STARSCREAM.
1990 –
* TRANSFORMERS ACTION MASTERS are released by Hasbro. These feature action figure versions of both classic and interesting new characters that don't change modes, but have vehicles and partners that do change modes.
1992 –
* Late in the year Hasbro introduces “TRANSFORMERS: Generation 2.” All of these toys are re-colored versions of figures from the early years of TRANSFORMERS: JAZZ, SIDESWIPE, INFERNO, STARSCREAM, RAMJET, OPTIMUS PRIME, the DINOBOTS, and CONSTRUCTICONS.
* There is a Generation 2 Television animated series, which featured all-new CGI graphics.
1993 –
* Hasbro introduces a new TRANSFORMERS feature into the lineup. Color-change cars have weapons that shoot water and parts that change color when hit by water, creating "battle damage."
* MEGATRON is revived by Hasbro and introduced as a tank with projectile weaponry and electronic sound effects.
* As a prelude to the new TRANSFORMERS comic, MEGATRON first appears in the G.I. JOE comic series.
1994 –
* The first BotCon, a TRANSFORMERS fan convention, is held in July in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The annual event has been held every year since, and continues to attract TRANSFORMERS fans from around the globe!

Hasbro Entertainment Experiences

Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE: HAS) kicks off the excitement of New York’s annual American International Toy Fair (February 11-14) with the introduction of a host of exciting and innovative toys and games -- along with products outside the traditional toy and game arena -- designed to provide a variety of fun and unique entertainment experiences for all members of the family.

Among the highlights in the more traditional Hasbro categories: some seriously cool boys action products based on the upcoming summer movie blockbusters—the live-action TRANSFORMERS feature film, set to release on July 4, and SPIDER-MAN 3 premiering on May 4; the latest, highly realistic “hatching” from the FURREAL FRIENDS team…SQUAWKERS MCCAW, an interactive parrot and the follow-up to the successful BUTTERSCOTCH pony; and NET JET, an instant online game system just for tweens. Proving that classics never go out of style, Hasbro celebrates the TONKA brand’s 60th anniversary with an all new developmental product, the WHEEL DRIVERS SCOOT N’ SCOOP 3-in-1 Ride On, and gives game players a whole new way to play classics in the GAME OF LIFE TWISTS AND TURNS and TWISTER MOVES HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL EDITION.

Since entertainment can take many shapes and forms, Hasbro is using its expertise in the music and technology area and bringing to market two highly unique products that stretch beyond toy and game boundaries: TOOTH TUNES – first introduced last fall in New York -- is now available nationally. This revolutionary tooth brush uses a safe and patented technology to transmit songs and music vibrations through the teeth, which are then heard in the inner ear. Also making its debut this year is the ultra cool POWER TOUR Electric Guitar from Tiger Electronics and Gibson Guitar that lets guitar fans learn to pound out power cords, shred leads and rock right out of the box.

“Hasbro is committed to bringing to market great products that leverage the latest technologies through our incredible portfolio of brands,” said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s chief operating officer. “In addition, Hasbro continues to open entirely new categories through innovation inspired by consumer insights and our quest to provide a wide variety of entertainment for the entire family.”

Highlights include:

Galactica Goodies

DST Launches Battlestar Galactica Action Figures!

Diamond Select Toys are proud to announce a partnership with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group to manufacture action figures and ships based on the SCI FI hit original series, Battlestar Galactica! Reimagined by Ron Moore, Battlestar Galactica tells the story of the last survivors of mankind and their quest to escape the murderous Cylons in their search for the mythical 13th Colony, Earth.

Battlestar Galactica premiered as a mini-series in 2003 to rave reviews from both critics and fans of the classic property, setting viewership records for the SciFi Channel. Leaving much of traditional science fiction behind, the new Battlestar Galactica instead focused on character-driven conflicts and the series’ epic storytelling style as viewers followed the triumphs and hardships of the Colonial Fleet. Having received the prestigious American Film Institute’s honorific “TV Program of the Year” for the second consecutive year, the stellar drama returns to the SciFi Channel on January 21st in a new timeslot; Sunday evenings at 10:00 pm EST.

In addition to the riveting plots and special effects, Battlestar Galactica features an incredibly diverse cast of characters portrayed by a mix of seasoned veterans and Hollywood newcomers. Accomplished actors Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell provide the necessary leadership as Admiral Adama and President Roslin, with a sizable supporting cast featuring the talents of Tricia Helfer, Katee Sackhof, Grace Park, Jamie Bamber and James Callis. With guest stars like Lucy Lawless, Dean Stockwell and Battlestar Galactica veteran Richard Hatch, this impressive cast steals the show and delivers rock-solid performances week after week.

DST plans to release the first action figure assortment this summer. The debut series will feature several key characters from the smash-hit series, including the seductive Six herself! Specific product announcements, as well as timetables for their release dates, will be featured in future Diamond Select Toys communications and at next month’s American International Toy Fair.

We’ve been loving the new Who action figures this year and now the fine folks behind them, Character Options, are celebrating that epic season finale with these two brilliant box sets, the Doomsday set with the Doctor, Dalek and Cyberman and the Genesis Ark with four Daleks (Cult of Skaro) and the Ark stolen from the Time Lords to generate a new Dalek army, so now you can re-enact the battle almost every fan has always wanted to see.

The Goblin King

After the much anticipated Palisades 12" doll of Jareth the Goblin King (played by David Bowie) was cancelled, and Palisades entered into receivership, many fans were left very disappointed. Now there is going to be an even better 7" version.

A terrific likeness of Jareth - as you would expect from NECA (National Entertainment Collectibles Association) - the figure comes with plastic and fabric costume parts and is complete with a crystal ball and interchangeable hands. Brilliant!

NECA plans on releasing two Jareth figures. The first figure features Jareth in his blue outfit from when he first appears in the film. This first figure is slated for release in March 2007. A second Jareth will ship later in 2007, and will come packaged with a special Hoggle figure pack-in. That right folks, a Hoggle action figure!

The Legend of Zelda merchandise

Did you secure a Wii-order on Tuesday from Amazon.co.uk? To belatedly mark the occasion of Amazon UK's most successful pre-order launch ever, eclipsing Harry Potter and Cold Play. This post is dedicated to fellow Nintendo merchandise collectors.

First 4 Figures is proud to announce a three-year licensing agreement with Nintendo for the rights to create statues based on The Legend of Zelda franchise, including characters from the hotly-anticipated The Legend of Zelda®: Twilight Princess.

"We are very excited to be working with Nintendo on the Legend of Zelda brand. The franchise has clearly stood the test of time, having just celebrated its 20th Anniversary.

The first game captured the imagination of a generation, with the following games capturing the imagination of another and then another. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess looks all set to do the same,” says Alex Davis, director of First 4 Figures. “We will be mainly concentrating on doing statues based on the games The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.”

There are plans for single statues, mixed media statues, and VS dioramas.

The first in the series of statues was previewed at this year’s E3 on Nintendo’s stand. They will be available in collectible and specialty stores worldwide as well as directly at the First 4 Figures website.

They will stand approximately 9 to 12 inches tall and will retail for $80 to $120 for single statues and $200+ for high end VS dioramas.

Current product development plans include, but not limited to:

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Young Link
Sheik
Ganondorf VS Link Diorama
Dark Link

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask

Fierce Deity Link
Skull Kid

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Zelda
Link

Wish I'd bought the 6" Zelda action figures by Toy Biz when I saw them!

Doctor Who Underground

BBC Worldwide announced today the appointment of Underground Toys Ltd. as the North American manufacturer and distributor for Doctor Who toy and collectible products, including the popular figure line from the UK’s award-winning Character Options Group. The deal was brokered by MOST MANAGEMENT, BBC’s North American licensing agency for the Doctor Who franchise.

Underground Toys will be bringing action figures, R/C figures, 12" collector dolls, clocks, watches, electronic gadgets, electronic keychains, diaries and more to market through their own distribution channels, direct-to-chain stores and through sub-distributors around the country. Underground Toys directly supplies specialty market retailers including Borders, Hot Topic and Spencer Gifts as well as independent retailers, comic book and hobby stores. Underground Toys will begin shipping initial products in time for the holidays, with a full roll out of the items in February 2007 at the International Toy Fair in New York.

Already a huge success in the UK, the Doctor Who toy line was the second highest-selling last Christmas in the UK and is expected to repeat its success this year. The line also won Best Licensed Toys and Games Award and the Innovation Award at the 2006 Licensing Awards.

“Underground Toys recognizes that there is a growing demand for Doctor Who products at retail in the USA and will be strongly pushing and supporting the brand into specialty retail,” said Robyn Morgan, Underground Toys' Licensing Manager. “We are focused on executing the merchandise program effectively in conjunction with the growing popularity of the new Doctor Who series."

“Underground toys has a wealth of experience and knowledge in the market along with an enthusiastic approach to the Doctor Who brand,” said Anna Hewitt, Head of International Licensing, BBC Worldwide. “We are thrilled that fans both new and old in North America will have a chance to purchase Doctor Who products.”

The first season of the new Doctor Who proved a huge success for SCI FI Channel, delivering an average of 1.5 million viewers each week. The second season began with a two-hour premier on September 29th, where over a million viewers tuned in to watch the new Doctor, David Tennant.

Doctor Who: The Complete First Series has become BBC Video’s best selling ‘Doctor Who’ DVD title ever in North America. The second series will arrive on DVD January 16, 2007, following the airing on SCI FI Channel this fall. In addition, over forty classic Doctor Who episodes are currently available on DVD through BBC Video, with new releases in the classics line releasing each quarter. A range of Doctor Who novels, featuring adventures from the new and classic Doctor Who series, is available through Diamond Book Distributors.

Recommended for Mature Collectors

Don't you love it when video games spawn action figures and assorted collectibles? Even Zelda has been immortalized in plastic. But what about those franchises that never see release? The House of the Dead is a prime example.

The House of the Dead is a first-person, light gun rail shooter arcade game released in 1996 by Sega, where the player assumes the role of a government agent who must shoot his way through an army of recently resurrected zombies.

The House of the Dead is a straightforward light gun game. Players simply use a light gun to aim at approaching enemies, and click the trigger to shoot them. The characters' pistols use clips of rounds, so even though the player has infinite ammo, they must reload once each clip is spent. This is done by pointing the gun away from the screen and pressing the trigger. A set of torches next to each player's clip shows their health. Anytime a player is attacked or shoots a civilian, one of their torches is put out. A player is considered "dead" when all of that player's torches are out. A dead player may continue by inserting more money (or selecting continue in the home versions). Sometimes a first-aid pack can be shot to restore health, and some civilians will give first-aid packs to the player if he or she saves them.

This game was one of the first such games to incorporate the possibilities of multiple routes. For instance, in the beginning of the game, a male civilian is about to be thrown off the bridge to his death. If players shoot the zombie and save the civilian, they will enter the house. If the civilian dies, players go down an underground route through the sewer. There are other critical points in which the players' actions decides where they go. This "choose-your-path" was later implemented in its three arcade sequels.

Back in 2003 Palisades cancelled their proposed second series of The House of the Dead action figure line, which is too bad as they looked great.

Merchandise Maniacs

So, avid reader what are you favorite franchises to collect? To start the ball rolling, I'll list (in no particular order) some stuff:

Star Wars Transformers
Why Hasbro didn't think of this sooner is a question for another day! Of course they didn't merge with Kenner until the early 90's. The initial releases were a bit hit and miss. Waves 2, 3 and 4 and there's no looking back, eh Annie?

Star Wars Die-Cast Titanium Series
Kenner's die-casts were collectible gold in the 70's and 80's. My parents bought me Darth Vader's TIE Fighter, X-Wing, Land Speeder, Imperial Cruiser (and Rebel Blockade Runner), Y-Wing, Snow Speeder, Slave I and Millennium Falcon. These are just too great for words and are ample compensation for never owning the elusive TIE Bomber!

Transformers Die-Cast Titanium Series
The G.I. Joe crossovers are an homage to the 80's Marvel comic. Can't wait to see Skywarp/Cobra Rattler jet.

DC Super Heroes
Mattel finally unleashes the Four Horsemen (MySpace friends) and demonstrate that they can go head-to-head with Marvel Legends. Marvel Legends are now licensed to Hasbro. The toy wars continue!

Doctor Who (both classic and 200x)
The Denys Fisher Mego range of 10" figures and accessories has a very special place in my childhood! Giant Robot, Doctor Who, Cyberman and Dalek were welcome company during an extended stay in hospital in 1977! Now Character Options' new merchandise has pride of place on my bookshelves.

Masters of the Universe (200x)
I'm still collecting 200x and NECA stactions (static action figures). Aren't you?

Drawing Red Shadows

As I was writing a bio for MySpace. I recalled the following anecdote, which is loosely relevant to the themes of this very blog!

When I wasn't playing with Star Wars, Transformers, Zoids, Masters of the Universe or G.I. Joe toys. I was sending unsolicited toy franchise submissions to Palitoy (the famous Coalville company which sub-licensed products from Hasbro and Kenner)! For example Baron Ironblood's, original UK name for Cobra Commander, Man o' War submersible. Whilst Palitoy invariably couldn't accept my ideas, their customer relations department graciously sent me posters and action figures along with dutifully returned artwork and a thank you note! Incidentally, Character Options is the modern equivalent of Palitoy and hopefully will not suffer its forebears fate.

In the UK weekly comic Battle Action Force, Baron Ironblood mercilessly allowed the destruction of the Red Shadows before emerging as Cobra Commander and the advent of the Marvel comic.

This brief quote from Marvel comics gives an insight into the motivation for the creation of Cobra Command:

"I'm not going to be ground under the wheels of big government!... I'm going to create an underground organization that will bypass government restrictions, and garner power through terrorism and extortion!... I won't stop until my organization coils around the whole world like a giant cobra!"-- Cobra Commander, circa. 1978

Unlike the animated series, Marvels G.I. Joe comic presented an insidious and palpable terrorist threat in the form of Cobra. From Crimson Guard to Zartan, the enemy was violent and relentless.
