Forever Is A Long Time Coming

When Hasbro, Inc. introduced the TRANSFORMERS brand to the U.S. in 1984, it revolutionized a category it had itself invented some 20 years earlier -- action figures.

TRANSFORMERS – originally dubbed “The Transformers” -- heralded an entirely new way to interact with action figures, giving kids the power to literally change the toys from one form into another (initially, from robots to vehicles). As the iconic theme song went, there was “more than meets the eye.”

But that was only the beginning. With intriguing personalities, captivating story lines and great battle action, Hasbro firmly entrenched the TRANSFORMERS brand into the pantheons of modern pop culture. Over the past two decades, the TRANSFORMERS brand has emerged as one of the most successful properties in action figure history, spawning numerous television series, comic books, and even a feature length animated film.

Today, the TRANSFORMERS brand has a devoted following of fans of all ages, with Optimus Prime and Megatron captivating a whole new generation of fans. The franchise is about to be taken to a new level with the July 4th premiere of the first-ever live-action feature film, TRANSFORMERS, from DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures, directed by Michael Bay and executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

A timeline of key TRANSFORMERS brand milestones follows

Pre-1984 –
· Hasbro secures the rights to many changing/converting robot brands in Japan and creates the umbrella name THE TRANSFORMERS to unite them. Takara, a Japanese toy manufacturer saw the potential for future TRANSFORMERS growth and becomes Hasbro’s lead partner in the development of new TRANSFORMERS products. This successful alliance has lasted for more than 20 years.
1984 –
* The TRANSFORMERS toy line is launched by Hasbro, with a classic theme song that had kids all over the U.S. reciting the refrain “Robots in Disguise.” There twenty-one toys in the original set, including OPTIMUS PRIME, MEGATRON, BUMBLEBEE, JAZZ and STARSCREAM. This is the beginning of what has come to be known the “Generation: 1” era.
* The TRANSFORMERS animated television series debuts with a mini series titled “MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE.” New episodes began in September, airing on Saturday mornings.
* Marvel Comics releases four-issue TRANSFORMERS comic series titled “The TRANSFORMERS.”
1985 –
* Hasbro releases second series of TRANSFORMERS toys, highlighted by the introduction of DINOBOTS and CONSTRUCTICONS (the first group of figures that can combine to form a larger robot).
* Two TRANSFORMERS figures are introduced with battery-operated functions: SHOCKWAVE has a flashing light and sound effects, and OMEGA SUPREME walks and has a tank with a turret that spins and lights up while rolling around a track.
1986 –
* The animated feature film titled TRANSFORMERS: The Movie was released in theaters, featuring many of the characters that the new toys were modeled after. It featured the voice talents of Leonard Nimoy, Eric Idle, Judd Nelson, Robert Stack, and Orson Welles, and a rock soundtrack.
* Hasbro introduces cities for both the AUTOBOTS and DECEPTICONS: METROPLEX for the AUTOBOTS and TRYPTICON for the DECEPTICONS.
1987 –
* The HEADMASTERS and TARGETMASTERS figures are introduced into the TRANSFORMERS toy line.
* Hasbro introduced FORTRESS MAXIMUS, the largest TRANSFORMERS figure at the time, measuring a whopping two-feet-tall.
1988 –
* Hasbro released the PRETENDERS, robots that disguise themselves inside an included shell, and MICROMASTERS, very, very small vehicle that changes into robots.
* OPTIMUS PRIME is revived with a new TRANSFORMERS figure from Hasbro, featuring ‘POWERMASTER” technology wherein a smaller robot is used to unlock a special feature on the larger, more deluxe figure.
1989 –
* Hasbro introduces four of the TRANSFORMERS fans’ favorite characters back into the toy line: BUMBLEBEE, JAZZ, GRIMLOCK and STARSCREAM.
1990 –
* TRANSFORMERS ACTION MASTERS are released by Hasbro. These feature action figure versions of both classic and interesting new characters that don't change modes, but have vehicles and partners that do change modes.
1992 –
* Late in the year Hasbro introduces “TRANSFORMERS: Generation 2.” All of these toys are re-colored versions of figures from the early years of TRANSFORMERS: JAZZ, SIDESWIPE, INFERNO, STARSCREAM, RAMJET, OPTIMUS PRIME, the DINOBOTS, and CONSTRUCTICONS.
* There is a Generation 2 Television animated series, which featured all-new CGI graphics.
1993 –
* Hasbro introduces a new TRANSFORMERS feature into the lineup. Color-change cars have weapons that shoot water and parts that change color when hit by water, creating "battle damage."
* MEGATRON is revived by Hasbro and introduced as a tank with projectile weaponry and electronic sound effects.
* As a prelude to the new TRANSFORMERS comic, MEGATRON first appears in the G.I. JOE comic series.
1994 –
* The first BotCon, a TRANSFORMERS fan convention, is held in July in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The annual event has been held every year since, and continues to attract TRANSFORMERS fans from around the globe!
* The AERIALBOTS and COMBATICONS TRANSFORMERS are revived by Hasbro with some new friends, the LASER RODS with light-up engines and weapons, and the ROTOR FORCE with rotor-weapons that can travel across a room.
* Hasbro introduces one of its most popular TRANSFORMERS to date – DREADWING, a Stealth bomber with three modes.
1995 –
* The animated series titled TRANSFORMERS: BEAST WARS debuts and is an instant hit.
1996 –

2001 –
· Hasbro re-introduces TRANSFORMERS as ROBOTS IN DISGUISE, returning to the classic concept of robots that change into cars, trucks, and other vehicles. The TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE series debuts.
2002 –
* The TRANSFORMERS ARMADA animated series debuts. Hasbro also launches the ARMADA toy line, featuring MINICONS, which connect to larger figures to enable new features. MINICONS were a bit hit with a new generation of young fans.

Hasbro Entertainment Experiences

Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE: HAS) kicks off the excitement of New York’s annual American International Toy Fair (February 11-14) with the introduction of a host of exciting and innovative toys and games -- along with products outside the traditional toy and game arena -- designed to provide a variety of fun and unique entertainment experiences for all members of the family.

Among the highlights in the more traditional Hasbro categories: some seriously cool boys action products based on the upcoming summer movie blockbusters—the live-action TRANSFORMERS feature film, set to release on July 4, and SPIDER-MAN 3 premiering on May 4; the latest, highly realistic “hatching” from the FURREAL FRIENDS team…SQUAWKERS MCCAW, an interactive parrot and the follow-up to the successful BUTTERSCOTCH pony; and NET JET, an instant online game system just for tweens. Proving that classics never go out of style, Hasbro celebrates the TONKA brand’s 60th anniversary with an all new developmental product, the WHEEL DRIVERS SCOOT N’ SCOOP 3-in-1 Ride On, and gives game players a whole new way to play classics in the GAME OF LIFE TWISTS AND TURNS and TWISTER MOVES HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL EDITION.

Since entertainment can take many shapes and forms, Hasbro is using its expertise in the music and technology area and bringing to market two highly unique products that stretch beyond toy and game boundaries: TOOTH TUNES – first introduced last fall in New York -- is now available nationally. This revolutionary tooth brush uses a safe and patented technology to transmit songs and music vibrations through the teeth, which are then heard in the inner ear. Also making its debut this year is the ultra cool POWER TOUR Electric Guitar from Tiger Electronics and Gibson Guitar that lets guitar fans learn to pound out power cords, shred leads and rock right out of the box.

“Hasbro is committed to bringing to market great products that leverage the latest technologies through our incredible portfolio of brands,” said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s chief operating officer. “In addition, Hasbro continues to open entirely new categories through innovation inspired by consumer insights and our quest to provide a wide variety of entertainment for the entire family.”

Highlights include:

TIGER ELECTRONICS

TOOTHTUNES’ safe and patented technology transmits songs and music vibrations through the teeth, which are then heard in the inner ear. Users will hear two full minutes of the hottest music from today’s biggest stars, which will keep them brushing. Hasbro will introduce up to 20 different versions of TOOTHTUNES this spring, each featuring a hit song. Kids can choose from a variety of their favorite tunes, the first wave to hit store shelves includes: All Star, Smashmouth; Get'cha Head in the Game, B5 from the High School Musical soundtrack; Best of Both Worlds, Mylie Cyrus / Hannah Montana; We're All in this Together, from the High School Musical soundtrack; The Party's Just Begun, The Cheetah Girls; Kiss The Girl, Ashley Tisdale. POWER TOUR Electric Guitar

Turn It On, Turn It Up, Rock Out™! With the POWER TOUR Electric Guitar, guitar fans can learn to pound out power cords, shred leads and rock right out of the box! Featuring four different modes – ‘jam,’ ‘learn,’ ‘band’ and ‘speaker’ - music enthusiasts can choose to learn how to play the 12 pre-loaded songs or plug in an MP3 player and jam along to their favorite playlist. Once a song is selected, tweens simply follow along to the lights - the POWER TOUR Electric Guitar will ‘light’ the way to where fingers should be placed so tweens can play at their own speed, hitting the right notes at the right time. As players learn, they can select from rock songs of increasing difficulty, and even change the guitar’s sound to ‘metal,’ ‘punk,’ ‘digital,’ or ‘indie.’ Featuring authentic guitar sounds and classic “Gibson” styling, the POWER TOUR Electric Guitar boasts lots of really cool guitar features including strum bar, palm mute bar, input/output jacks, touch sensors, multicolored LED lights and dual function knobs. Tweens have never rocked this hard, this easy! Four “AA” batteries are required but not included. (Approximate retail price: $69.99; Ages 10 years & up; Available: August 2007)

Using the included dual ended cable, plug I-CY into the headphone jack of any standard music system and music will broadcast through a built-in speaker. Whether users plug I-CY into a hand-held music system or simply sit it in front of a speaker I-CY will flap its flippers and rock side to side with the rhythm of the song. Watch I-CY’s belly light up with delight as it moves and grooves to the music. View Askew

Today's post is a little different! Instead of the usual ramble, I've decided to step aside and promote Brian Edward's Scifind.co.uk! Let me stress that this is not a paid-for post in the style of ReviewMe. I know Brian through his management of the Forbidden Planet International affiliate scheme. Nuff said.

Exclusive Kevin Smith Interview
Recorded in September 2006. Listen to Brian's exclusive podcast (iTunes link) interview with cool cult movie director Kevin Smith, creator of Clerks and Jay and Silent Bob.

Kevin Smith (MP3) talks about...

Clerks 2
Superman Lives
Jay and Silent Bob the Video Game
Jay and Silent Bob Teddies

For further information please see here.

Be sure to checkout Kevin Smith on MySpace. You never know, he might just add you too!

New Writers Needed
It is with the new year, and a boom in business, that Brian's desperately looking for new writers to produce original reviews, and news, for Scifind.co.uk and associated sites on an informal basis.

The right candidates must have a proven passion for movies and science fiction.

Candidates will be looking to get a foothold in writing for film and tv publications such as Dreamwatch, SFX and Starburst.

Although the position doesn't require a qualification in English per se. The right candidate should be able to submit well-crafted, grammatically correct, and spell checked reviews and news items.

Ideally candidates should be located in London; there will be the possibility of attending press screenings / press conferences and interview sessions.

Candidates will be judged on sample reviews.

Benefits of writing for Scifind.co.uk will include free DVDs, CDs and video games.

Anyone interested please contact Brian Edwards using the Scifind Ltd contact details form. Thank you.

Gatchaman

Growing up did you ever have a crush on a cartoon character? Mine was Princess from Battle Of The Planets! And I'm so glad to have held-off purchasing the R2 DVD set. The R1 edition (from Rhino) boasts both the US version (familiar with most children of the 70's and 80's) and original Japanese source Gatchaman. Here's the Rhino PR blurb:

From the award-winning Japanese animation team that created Speed Racer and Robotech comes one of the most influential Anime shows ever! This four-DVD boxed set features 12 original, uncut and unedited episodes. Bonus features include 12 original, uncut and unedited Japanese Gatchaman episodes with English subtitles (each corresponding to a Battle Of The Planets show in the boxed set), as well as interviews, commentary, trailers, and a memorabilia gallery.

Not since the premature demise of Anime UK/FX magazine (thanks for all those cool e-mails Helen McCarthy) have I been this excited about anime. Be sure to comeback for my review of Battle Of The Planets: The Ultimate DVD Boxed Set in a few weeks.

Memory Lane

For several generations of Whovians, this time of year is synonymous with watching Doctor Who on television! And, with the changeable weather, there's no better time to buy digitally remastered adventures missing from your DVD collection!

Sendit.com has reduced the RRP £19.99 on selected titles to just £7.89 including:

Inferno
"If you break through the Earth's crust now you'll release forces you never dreamed existed!"

20th Century Earth. An unhinged scientist, Professor Stahlman, is attempting the first penetration of the Earth's crust in a top secret drilling project called Inferno. His purpose? To tap into a new energy source at the core. But at what cost? When the Doctor is called in with his companion Liz Shaw to oversee the project, he soon develops grave misgivings. Things begin to go very wrong when a mysterious green substance leaks from the drillhead. A substance which turns all who come into contact with it into alien primeval creatures called Primords.

Meanwhile, the Doctor finds himself transported into a parallel universe identical to 20th Century Earth. The mystery deepens as he finds that although the place, time and people are all the same, no-one seems to know who he is. Only one thing is certain: the drilling must be stopped before the full force of the energy from the core is unleashed, destroying not only this Earth but the one the Doctor has just left behind.

Genesis of the Daleks
The Doctor and his companions are transported back in time by the Time Lords who have decided that the Daleks need to be destroyed. The Doctor's mission is to change history so that they have never existed. Soon they are separated and The Doctor and Harry are captured by the evil Elite of the mad scientist Davros, who is working to perfect his Mark 3 travel machine: the Dalek.

The Hand of Fear
The TARDIS materialises in an English quarry where Sarah is involved in a rock fall. When she is rescued, she is clutching a stone hand, which takes control of her and forces her to take it into the core of a nuclear reactor. The Doctor (Tom Baker) arrives too late to stop the hand from regenerating into an alien lifeform known as Eldrad, who demands to be returned to her home planet of Kastria. The Doctor obliges, but all is not as it seems with Eldrad. This was Sarah Jane Smith's last adventure with the Doctor, although she later returned in 'K-9 and Company', 'The Five Doctors' and 'Downtime'.

Classics one and all.

Doctor Who Underground

BBC Worldwide announced today the appointment of Underground Toys Ltd. as the North American manufacturer and distributor for Doctor Who toy and collectible products, including the popular figure line from the UK’s award-winning Character Options Group. The deal was brokered by MOST MANAGEMENT, BBC’s North American licensing agency for the Doctor Who franchise.

Underground Toys will be bringing action figures, R/C figures, 12" collector dolls, clocks, watches, electronic gadgets, electronic keychains, diaries and more to market through their own distribution channels, direct-to-chain stores and through sub-distributors around the country. Underground Toys directly supplies specialty market retailers including Borders, Hot Topic and Spencer Gifts as well as independent retailers, comic book and hobby stores. Underground Toys will begin shipping initial products in time for the holidays, with a full roll out of the items in February 2007 at the International Toy Fair in New York.

Already a huge success in the UK, the Doctor Who toy line was the second highest-selling last Christmas in the UK and is expected to repeat its success this year. The line also won Best Licensed Toys and Games Award and the Innovation Award at the 2006 Licensing Awards.

“Underground Toys recognizes that there is a growing demand for Doctor Who products at retail in the USA and will be strongly pushing and supporting the brand into specialty retail,” said Robyn Morgan, Underground Toys' Licensing Manager. “We are focused on executing the merchandise program effectively in conjunction with the growing popularity of the new Doctor Who series."

“Underground toys has a wealth of experience and knowledge in the market along with an enthusiastic approach to the Doctor Who brand,” said Anna Hewitt, Head of International Licensing, BBC Worldwide. “We are thrilled that fans both new and old in North America will have a chance to purchase Doctor Who products.”

The first season of the new Doctor Who proved a huge success for SCI FI Channel, delivering an average of 1.5 million viewers each week. The second season began with a two-hour premier on September 29th, where over a million viewers tuned in to watch the new Doctor, David Tennant.

Doctor Who: The Complete First Series has become BBC Video’s best selling ‘Doctor Who’ DVD title ever in North America. The second series will arrive on DVD January 16, 2007, following the airing on SCI FI Channel this fall. In addition, over forty classic Doctor Who episodes are currently available on DVD through BBC Video, with new releases in the classics line releasing each quarter. A range of Doctor Who novels, featuring adventures from the new and classic Doctor Who series, is available through Diamond Book Distributors.

Interface

The template has undergone further cosmetic tweaking in the hope that it's more aesthetically pleasing and intuitive for readers.

The changes made to this blog's layout are certainly nowhere near as dramatic (and controversial) as those being undertaken by Paramount for the HD DVD releases of both Classic and Next Generation Star Trek franchises! George Lucas (whom I still hold in high regard) has a lot to answer for!

I'm a longtime advocate of digital restoration and archival, but applying CGI gloss for, arguably, purely fiscal reasons is cynical. As a friend pointed out, by all means clean up the odd matt line, here and there, without diluting the essence! The Doctor Who restoration team continues to successfully marry restoration with preserving the authenticity of the source material.

The Incredible Sarah

Thirtysomething Doctor Who fans rejoice! The Hand of Fear (1976) debuts on DVD for the first time next month.

When the TARDIS lands on Earth in a quarry (where else?), the Doctor and Sarah are caught in a mining explosion. She is found clutching what appears to be a fossilised hand, buried in 150 million-year-old strata. Analysis shows the hand to be silicon-based and inert, but when Sarah begins to act as if possessed, the Doctor suspects that it may still be alive...

Every self-respecting fan knows that this is the story in which Sarah Jane Smith leaves the Tardis for the last time (until the highly affecting School Reunion). I have no memory what-so-ever of this story and can't wait.

Who's Back!

Here's a roundup of the latest Doctor Who news.

Third year
Today the BBC confirmed that both David Tennant and Billie Piper have both signed up to appear in the third series of Doctor Who.

The news ends long-standing speculation that Piper was planning to quit her role as Rose Tyler at the end of the upcoming second series.

"There are lots of places for Rose to go," said Piper at the press launch for series two, which begins on April 15. "I have had a ball. I might still be here in 40 years."

Box of DVD Delights
The new series of Doctor Who will be making a speedy transfer to DVD, the BBC has announced.

The first volume from series two comprises the 'Christmas Invasion' special and episode one from series two, titled 'New Earth'.

The set will be out on Monday, May 1 - just weeks after the show's expected premiere on BBC One.

Series two is being split across five single DVD volumes. A complete boxset of series two, including the Christmas episode and a host of extras, will be released on November 20. Get those pre-orders in early!

Kenner's M.A.S.K.

The following press release, from DIC, should delight animation, video game and toy brand enthusiasts alike! Of particular note, to me at least, is Kenner's M.A.S.K. and Pole Position (licensed by Atari/Namco) animated series. Both had memorable theme tunes (advertising jingles) and primetime slots on commercial television stations.

Although M.A.S.K and several other brands have already been distributed on VHS and DVD, it remains unclear what DIC intends to do with the properties. The smart money is on season box sets and extras.

DIC ENTERTAINMENT RE-ACQUIRES THE RIGHTS TO OVER 750 HALF-HOURS OF ANIMATED PROPERTIES

DIC ENTERTAINMENT RE-ACQUIRES THE RIGHTS TO OVER 750 HALF-HOURS OF ANIMATED PROPERTIES FROM THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY AND JETIX EUROPE FOR GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION

Burbank, California – March 22, 2006 – DIC Entertainment (DIC) has re-acquired the rights to an extensive slate of animated children’s properties from The Walt Disney Company and Jetix Europe for television, home entertainment and consumer products. As part of the deal, DIC will now control various marketing and distribution rights for 750 half-hour episodes of globally recognized brands previously produced by DIC, including Care Bears, Inspector Gadget, Heathcliff, Dennis the Menace, The Littles, and more.

“We have one of the largest libraries of animation in the world consisting of some of the most popular children’s properties ever, and we are thrilled to have these properties back in the DIC family,” comments Heyward. “There is always a huge demand for classic children’s programming, particularly in the home entertainment marketplace, and we look forward to offering our clients these series across multiple platforms.”

The slate of top-programming, which will be offered at MIP-TV this year, includes, Inspector Gadget (86 half-hours), Beverly Hills Teens (65 half-hours), Care Bears (11 half-hours), Dennis the Menace (78 half-hours), Dennis the Menace specials (3 hours), Get Along Gang (13 half-hours), Heathcliff (86 half-hours), Hulk Hogan (26 half-hours), Jayce & the Wheeled Warriors (65 half-hours), Lady Lovelylocks (10 half-hours), The Littles (29 half-hours), MASK (75 half-hours), Photon (26 half-hours), Pole Position (13 half-hours), Poochie (1 hour), Popples (23 half-hours), Rainbow Brite (13 half-hours), Starcom (13 half-hours), Sylvanian Families (13 half-hours), The Littles Movies (6 hours) and Ulysses 31 (26 half-hours).

Brand highlights from the new programming include Care Bears, an evergreen property and one of the most popular children’s brands across the world. Since re-launching four years ago, Care Bears has grown into a 1.8 billion dollar franchise and generated more than 600 million dollars n worldwide retail in 2005. Inspector Gadget, DIC’s flagship property, is a hit franchise that includes a television series which has aired for over 20 years in key territories around the world.

Additionally, the property has been a major success with two blockbuster features--a star-studded, Disney live-action feature film that generated over $100 million at the box-office and a direct-to-DVD title which has sold nearly 3 million units to date. Based on the classic cartoon strip which still appears in over 1,000 newspapers globally, Heathcliff has been a best-selling children’s book, a greeting card line and #1 best-selling comic book.

The Powers of Grayskull: Part III

The evil cadre of Skeletor, Beast Man, Trap Jaw and Tri-Klops were hired to bolster Darth Vader's Bounty Hunters. Castle Grayskull served as Vader's weekend retreat so-to-speak and Snake Mountain became the adopted home of the Emperor and source of unimaginable Sith power.

During a family holiday to Innsbruck (1984), between organized coach trips we would walk around the shops. The Austrian toy and model stores overflowed with Masters of the Universe action figures and accessories (sold seperately) that were not available in the UK. One of the most coveted was Prince Adam and the fact that I wasn't allowed to buy him left me emotionally scared. I had to content myself with an Action Force Summer Special comic instead!

By 1987 I set aside 'childish' things and waited anxiously for the release of Michael Jackson's Bad album. However, that didn't preclude me from seeing the camp movie (starring a young Courteney Cox) and savoring Bill Conti's copy cat score (see John Williams).

Mattel's 2002 revival of the enduring billion dollar property has met with mixed success. Mattel flooded the market with worthless repaints. In 2004 I tracked down Mer-Man (an overlooked figure from the original) and last year made a successful bid for the elusive and very rare Evil-Lyn. The new sculpt, by Four Horsemen Studios, captures the beauty of Skeletor's duplicitous sorceress.

With the R1 release of Masters of the Universe DVD and UMD, the Masters of the Universe renaissance is secure for generations to come.
