Toy Fair 2008 - Transformers Crossovers

When Hasbro announced Marvel Transformers, I was sceptical, due, in part, to the scattergun success of Star Wars Transformers! Well, I'll be eating my own words, it seems, if these official images, from Toy Fair 2008, are anything to go by!

Iron Man and The Hulk have transitioned well into Hasbro's new Transformers Crossovers line (incorporating Marvel & Star Wars)!

G.I. Joe can't be too far behind!

Hasbro Entertainment Experiences

Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE: HAS) kicks off the excitement of New York’s annual American International Toy Fair (February 11-14) with the introduction of a host of exciting and innovative toys and games -- along with products outside the traditional toy and game arena -- designed to provide a variety of fun and unique entertainment experiences for all members of the family.

Among the highlights in the more traditional Hasbro categories: some seriously cool boys action products based on the upcoming summer movie blockbusters—the live-action TRANSFORMERS feature film, set to release on July 4, and SPIDER-MAN 3 premiering on May 4; the latest, highly realistic “hatching” from the FURREAL FRIENDS team…SQUAWKERS MCCAW, an interactive parrot and the follow-up to the successful BUTTERSCOTCH pony; and NET JET, an instant online game system just for tweens. Proving that classics never go out of style, Hasbro celebrates the TONKA brand’s 60th anniversary with an all new developmental product, the WHEEL DRIVERS SCOOT N’ SCOOP 3-in-1 Ride On, and gives game players a whole new way to play classics in the GAME OF LIFE TWISTS AND TURNS and TWISTER MOVES HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL EDITION.

Since entertainment can take many shapes and forms, Hasbro is using its expertise in the music and technology area and bringing to market two highly unique products that stretch beyond toy and game boundaries: TOOTH TUNES – first introduced last fall in New York -- is now available nationally. This revolutionary tooth brush uses a safe and patented technology to transmit songs and music vibrations through the teeth, which are then heard in the inner ear. Also making its debut this year is the ultra cool POWER TOUR Electric Guitar from Tiger Electronics and Gibson Guitar that lets guitar fans learn to pound out power cords, shred leads and rock right out of the box.

“Hasbro is committed to bringing to market great products that leverage the latest technologies through our incredible portfolio of brands,” said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s chief operating officer. “In addition, Hasbro continues to open entirely new categories through innovation inspired by consumer insights and our quest to provide a wide variety of entertainment for the entire family.”

Highlights include:

TIGER ELECTRONICS

TOOTH TUNES

Brushing your teeth is about to feel – and sound – better than ever as Tiger Electronics delivers on its promise of product innovation with the revolutionary TOOTHTUNES, a brand new toothbrush featuring proprietary technology that will encourage people of all ages to brush for two full minutes – the amount of time generally recommended by dentists. TOOTHTUNES’ safe and patented technology transmits songs and music vibrations through the teeth, which are then heard in the inner ear. Users will hear two full minutes of the hottest music from today’s biggest stars, which will keep them brushing. Hasbro will introduce up to 20 different versions of TOOTHTUNES this spring, each featuring a hit song. Kids can choose from a variety of their favorite tunes, the first wave to hit store shelves includes: All Star, Smashmouth; Get'cha Head in the Game, B5 from the High School Musical soundtrack; Best of Both Worlds, Mylie Cyrus / Hannah Montana; We're All in this Together, from the High School Musical soundtrack; The Party's Just Begun, The Cheetah Girls; Kiss The Girl, Ashley Tisdale. For updates on new TOOTHTUNES releases visit www.toothtunes.com. (Approximate retail price $9.99; Available nationwide in February 2007. Three AAA batteries are included.)

POWER TOUR Electric Guitar

Turn It On, Turn It Up, Rock Out™! With the POWER TOUR Electric Guitar, guitar fans can learn to pound out power cords, shred leads and rock right out of the box! Featuring four different modes – ‘jam,’ ‘learn,’ ‘band’ and ‘speaker’ - music enthusiasts can choose to learn how to play the 12 pre-loaded songs or plug in an MP3 player and jam along to their favorite playlist. Once a song is selected, tweens simply follow along to the lights - the POWER TOUR Electric Guitar will ‘light’ the way to where fingers should be placed so tweens can play at their own speed, hitting the right notes at the right time. As players learn, they can select from rock songs of increasing difficulty, and even change the guitar’s sound to ‘metal,’ ‘punk,’ ‘digital,’ or ‘indie.’ Featuring authentic guitar sounds and classic “Gibson” styling, the POWER TOUR Electric Guitar boasts lots of really cool guitar features including strum bar, palm mute bar, input/output jacks, touch sensors, multicolored LED lights and dual function knobs. Tweens have never rocked this hard, this easy! Four “AA” batteries are required but not included. (Approximate retail price: $69.99; Ages 10 years & up; Available: August 2007)

I-CY

What’s black and white and cool all over? I-CY, the performing penguin! The newest – and ‘chillest’ – interactive music companion in the popular I-DOG family, I-CY loves to ‘dive’ into music of all kinds: rock, punk, rap, hip-hop and more! Using the included dual ended cable, plug I-CY into the headphone jack of any standard music system and music will broadcast through a built-in speaker. Whether users plug I-CY into a hand-held music system or simply sit it in front of a speaker I-CY will flap its flippers and rock side to side with the rhythm of the song. Watch I-CY’s belly light up with delight as it moves and grooves to the music. To keep this penguin pal happy and groovin’ give it lots of music and interaction – but watch out, you can make I-CY mad (and mute your music) by pressing its tail! Three AAA batteries are required, but not included. (Approximate retail price $19.99; Ages 8 years & up; Available: Spring 2007)

DST Launches Battlestar Galactica Action Figures!

Diamond Select Toys are proud to announce a partnership with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group to manufacture action figures and ships based on the SCI FI hit original series, Battlestar Galactica! Reimagined by Ron Moore, Battlestar Galactica tells the story of the last survivors of mankind and their quest to escape the murderous Cylons in their search for the mythical 13th Colony, Earth.

Battlestar Galactica premiered as a mini-series in 2003 to rave reviews from both critics and fans of the classic property, setting viewership records for the SciFi Channel. Leaving much of traditional science fiction behind, the new Battlestar Galactica instead focused on character-driven conflicts and the series’ epic storytelling style as viewers followed the triumphs and hardships of the Colonial Fleet. Having received the prestigious American Film Institute’s honorific “TV Program of the Year” for the second consecutive year, the stellar drama returns to the SciFi Channel on January 21st in a new timeslot; Sunday evenings at 10:00 pm EST.

In addition to the riveting plots and special effects, Battlestar Galactica features an incredibly diverse cast of characters portrayed by a mix of seasoned veterans and Hollywood newcomers. Accomplished actors Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell provide the necessary leadership as Admiral Adama and President Roslin, with a sizable supporting cast featuring the talents of Tricia Helfer, Katee Sackhof, Grace Park, Jamie Bamber and James Callis. With guest stars like Lucy Lawless, Dean Stockwell and Battlestar Galactica veteran Richard Hatch, this impressive cast steals the show and delivers rock-solid performances week after week.

DST plans to release the first action figure assortment this summer. The debut series will feature several key characters from the smash-hit series, including the seductive Six herself! Specific product announcements, as well as timetables for their release dates, will be featured in future Diamond Select Toys communications and at next month’s American International Toy Fair.

Underground Toys will begin shipping initial products in time for the holidays, with a full roll out of the items in February 2007 at the International Toy Fair in New York.

Already a huge success in the UK, the Doctor Who toy line was the second highest-selling last Christmas in the UK and is expected to repeat its success this year. The line also won Best Licensed Toys and Games Award and the Innovation Award at the 2006 Licensing Awards.

“Underground Toys recognizes that there is a growing demand for Doctor Who products at retail in the USA and will be strongly pushing and supporting the brand into specialty retail,” said Robyn Morgan, Underground Toys' Licensing Manager. “We are focused on executing the merchandise program effectively in conjunction with the growing popularity of the new Doctor Who series."

“Underground toys has a wealth of experience and knowledge in the market along with an enthusiastic approach to the Doctor Who brand,” said Anna Hewitt, Head of International Licensing, BBC Worldwide. “We are thrilled that fans both new and old in North America will have a chance to purchase Doctor Who products.”

The first season of the new Doctor Who proved a huge success for SCI FI Channel, delivering an average of 1.5 million viewers each week. The second season began with a two-hour premier on September 29th, where over a million viewers tuned in to watch the new Doctor, David Tennant.

Doctor Who: The Complete First Series has become BBC Video’s best selling ‘Doctor Who’ DVD title ever in North America. The second series will arrive on DVD January 16, 2007, following the airing on SCI FI Channel this fall. In addition, over forty classic Doctor Who episodes are currently available on DVD through BBC Video, with new releases in the classics line releasing each quarter. A range of Doctor Who novels, featuring adventures from the new and classic Doctor Who series, is available through Diamond Book Distributors.

T.M.X

Ordinarily I'd never mention Sesame Street on a blog predominantly concerned with Doctor Who and cult collectibles! The show was a staple of my childhood and this toy is just too cool.

Be the first to own what will be one of the hottest toys this Christmas on both sides of the Atlantic!

TMX Elmo is now in stock at The Entertainer!

Ten years ago, everyone's favorite Sesame Street character made history as one of the most sought-after toys of all time. The toy caused a frenzy, with anxious toy shoppers waiting for hours in long lines when they heard news of a new shipment. Since Tickle Me Elmo's 1996 introduction, he's done the Chicken Dance, the Hokey Pokey and his very own version of Y-M-C-A.

Hop on over to The Entertainer and watch Elmo in action!

Hermione's Bust

Make way for Harry Potter merchandise this holiday season! Why am I drawing your attention to the holiday so soon? Only last week Harrods opened its Christmas department to London shoppers.

There will be a whole load of new collectibles coming for the wonderful Harry Potter line later this year including busts of Ron and a Merpeople statue. Here's a sneek peak at another much requested piece in the form of a bust of Hermione Granger. She will stand around 6" tall - this is an early prototype shown at New York toy fair and may be subject to some final changes before release.

The Powers of Grayskull: Part I

At a time when Mattel's strapline, the world's number one name in toys, could be seen on every toy aisle around the globe, Masters of the Universe were a feature of my childhood. First a history lesson.

Masters of the Universe is significant for two reasons. It was the first major toy line which incorporated action features, making the figures more than just posable toys. As a result, many future lines would strive to include some sort of action feature... even if it was nothing more than an accessory which snapped onto the figure itself. Action features, however, were not the key factor in the success of the line.

Just prior to Christmas 1983, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) lifted a number of restrictions on children's television programming. Among the regulations, which were overturned, was a 1969 decision that prohibited television shows based on toy products. This precedent had been established when the Tonka corporation filed suit with the FCC to prevent Mattel from producing a Hot Wheels television program.

The now-defunct Filmation Associates, a subsidiary of Westinghouse, was quick to take advantage of the deregulation. With the cooperation of Mattel, they produced sixty-five half-hour episodes of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Filmation was unable to sell the series to any of the major networks, so they tried a different approach. Instead of selling the show, they traded the animated sequences for a portion of the air time, allowing local stations to keep the advertising revenues.

I'll conclude the history lesson in my next post!
